There are more than 67 certifying bodies for coaching, but the “gold standard” is the International Coach Federation (ICF). Formed in 1995, the ICF is the leading global organization dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high standards, providing independent certification, and building a network of credentialed coaches. A recognized certificate may be required, especially if you plan to work with corporate clients.
As the coaching industry expands, the demand for accredited coaches grows. Accreditation ensures that a coach has undergone rigorous training and meets high standards. Clients want to be assured that their coach has the necessary training and experience. The ICF's approval process involves an analysis of the quality of training, the qualifications of trainers, and the assessment process to ensure adherence to ICF core competencies.
Master trainers must have both a training certification and a coaching credential. They should have extensive coaching experience and an active coaching practice to demonstrate the application of theory in real-world scenarios. ICF certification was developed to provide clear standards and guidelines for the coaching profession. As coaching grew, it became essential to define coaching competencies and ensure that coaches were well-trained and could demonstrate competency in their field.
In 1998, ICF formed committees to establish standards, ethics, and competencies. Heads of various coaching schools came together to co-create the competencies that define coaching today. These standards ensure that all ICF-accredited coaches meet the same high level of competence.
ICF offers three levels of credentials:
